Het kan een verwoestend effect hebben op de eigenaar, die niet alleen het voertuig zelf maar ook persoonlijke bezittingen en herinneringen kan verliezen. Daarnaast kan het ook grote financi\u00eble gevolgen hebben. In deze blog zullen we kijken naar de statistieken en trends van diefstallen van caravans en campers in Europa, en wat u tegen diefstal kunt doen.\n\nWaar in Nederland worden de meeste campers en caravans gestolen?\nIn 2022 werden de meeste aanhangers en caravans, gestolen in politieregio Oost-Nederland (116), gevolgd door Rotterdam (71). Gemiddeld waren er vorig jaar 51 meldingen per politie-eenheid. Niet toevallig telt Gelderland, onderdeel van politie-eenheid Oost-Nederland, de meeste campings van Nederland. Campers en caravans staan dus helaas niet altijd en overal 100% veilig. \n\nHet meest in trek zijn voertuigen die drie tot vijf jaar oud zijn. \nHeeft u daarom een nieuwe camper of caravan besteld is dit zeker aan te raden voorzorgmaatregelen te nemen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een GPS-tracker die u achteraf kunt (laten) monteren. Met E-Track&amp;Trace (GPS-tracker) van E-Trailer kan dat! Wilt u meer weten over GPS-trackers lees dan hier verder.\n\nHoe veilig is uw caravan of camper in Nederland en daarbuiten?\nVolgens het European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) zijn er geen exacte cijfers beschikbaar over het aantal gestolen caravans en campers in Europa. Dit komt omdat er geen uniforme registratie is van deze diefstallen in de EU-landen. Dit maakt het moeilijk om nauwkeurige statistieken bij te houden.\n\nDesondanks hebben sommige EU-landen wel gegevens gepubliceerd over het aantal diefstallen van caravans en campers. In Nederland werden in 2021 bijvoorbeeld meer dan 600 campers en caravans gestolen, terwijl in Belgi\u00eb bijna 200 campers werden gestolen. Duitsland heeft het hoogste aantal gestolen campers en caravans, met meer dan 2.600 gevallen in 2020. \n\nVolgens het LIV* is het aantal diefstallen van caravans in 2022 met 6% toegenomen ten opzichte van 2021. Die toename is relatief klein vergeleken met de toename van 11% van gestolen personenvoertuigen, waaronder (bus)campers. Het verschil is echter dat 45% van de gestolen personenvoertuigen werd teruggevonden, tegen slechts 20% van de gestolen caravans. \n\nIn het buitenland is de situatie helaas niet veel beter. In 2022 is het aantal gestolen voertuigen met een Nederlands kenteken in Europa gestegen met 35% ten opzichte van 2021. Daarvan is slechts 12% teruggevonden. \n\nAls uw kampeervoertuig gestolen wordt, wat dan?\nBedrijven maken al lang gebruik van GPS-trackers voor bijvoorbeeld rittenregistratie. Dankzij deze GPS-trackers worden bedrijfsvoertuigen relatief vaak teruggevonden. \n\nNu is er ook een GPS-tracker speciaal voor campers en caravans. E-Track&amp;Trace van E-Trailer is discreet en geeft alleen een waarschuwing als het kampeermiddel buiten de zogenaamde veiligheidszone rijdt. Een veiligheidszone is een soort virtueel hek, waarmee de gebruiker een locatie, bijvoorbeeld een kampeerplaats, afbakent. Zodra het kampeermiddel buiten de veiligheidszone komt, ontvangt de gebruiker direct een waarschuwing op zijn of haar smartphone en kan er actie ondernomen worden. \n\nDieven zullen bij diefstal zo snel mogelijk op zoek gaan naar een GPS-zender en deze onklaar maken. Vaak is daar pas tijd voor als ze zich buiten het kampeerterrein bevinden en duurt het een tijd voordat zij een rustige plek hebben gevonden om de zender uit het kampeermiddel te slopen. Voor de gebruiker is snel handelen daarom van belang. Dat vergroot immers de pakkans. Het GPS-tracker van E-Trailer heeft een ingebouwde herlaadbare batterij en heeft u een bijkomend voordeel. Zelfs als de GPS-tracker wordt losgekoppeld van de accu kan het voertuig nog een week daarna getraceerd worden. \n\nDe GPS-tracker kan op veel verschillende plekken worden gemonteerd in een camper of caravan. Hierdoor zal de dieven meer tijd nodig hebben om die te vinden tussen de rijkelijk aanwezig elektronica aanboort. Bovendien weten inbrekers natuurlijk \u00fcberhaupt niet dat er een GPS-tracker is! De pakkans wordt hierdoor des te groter waardoor de politie vaak alleen in actie komt als er melding wordt gemaakt van een gestolen voertuig met GPS-tracker.\n\nTip: Check het Gestolen Obucten Register \nWist u dat u aansprakelijk gesteld kunt worden als u, zonder dat u dat wist, een gestolen camper of caravan heeft gekocht? Check daarom eerst het Gestolen Obucten Register (GOR) voordat u een tweedehandse kampeermiddel aanschaft. Registration systems and statistical categories vary between countries. Some countries record motorhomes separately from passenger cars, while others include them in broader vehicle categories.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Nevertheless, the available statistics show that vehicle theft remains a significant problem.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The methods used by thieves are also constantly evolving. Organised criminal networks use electronic techniques to steal vehicles without leaving visible signs of forced entry. Stolen vehicles may then be transported abroad and sold or dismantled for spare parts.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">This means that your motorhome or caravan could be at risk of theft at home, in a car park, on a motorhome stopover site or whilst you are on holiday. Only the German figures relate specifically to motorhomes. The statistics for the other countries cover broader vehicle categories.<\/p><h3><strong>1.3 Germany: Motorhome Theft Remains a Concern<\/strong><\/h3><p><br \/>Germany provides relatively detailed statistics on motorhome theft. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) report Bundeslagebild Kfz-Kriminalit\u00e4t 2025, a total of 470 motorhomes were recorded as permanently missing in 2025, compared with 473 in 2024. This represents a slight decrease, despite the continued growth in the number of registered motorhomes. In 2025, Germany had 1,046,383 registered motorhomes, an increase of 6.7% compared with the previous year. The rate of motorhomes permanently reported missing therefore fell to approximately 4.5 per 10,000 registered motorhomes. This is an encouraging development. Nevertheless, motorhomes remain attractive targets for organised criminal networks because of their high value. Some stolen vehicles are transported abroad or dismantled so that their components can be sold separately.<\/p><h3><strong>1.4 The Netherlands: Vehicle Theft Increased in 2025<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/h3><p>In the Netherlands, statistics published by the Stichting Verzekeringsbureau Voertuigcriminaliteit (VbV), the Dutch vehicle crime insurance bureau, show an increase in passenger car theft. In 2025, a total of 7,497 passenger cars were stolen, representing an increase of 12% compared with 2024. The total financial losses associated with these thefts exceeded \u20ac127 million, an increase of 38%. The recovery rate for stolen passenger cars remained relatively stable at approximately 55%. These figures relate specifically to passenger cars and cannot be used to determine the number of motorhomes or caravans stolen. Meanwhile, camping continues to grow in popularity in the Netherlands. As of 1 December 2025, the Netherlands had a record 634,660 registered motorhomes and caravans. With such a large number of leisure vehicles, theft prevention remains an important consideration for their owners.<\/p><h3><strong>1.5 Belgium: Thousands of Vehicles Stolen Every Year<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/h3><p>In Belgium, statistics published by the Federal Police show that vehicle theft remains a serious concern. In 2025, 6,228 passenger car thefts were recorded, compared with 5,758 in 2024. This represents an increase of approximately 8.2%. The statistics also recorded a total of 240,890 incidents of theft and extortion across all categories in 2025. However, these figures do not relate specifically to motorhomes and caravans. Recent national statistics distinguishing these two categories remain difficult to obtain. Nevertheless, the number of motorhomes in Belgium continues to grow. At the end of 2024, Belgium had 77,107 registered motorhomes, representing an increase of 30.6% over five years. This growth highlights the importance of raising awareness of theft risks and encouraging owners to consider appropriate security solutions for their leisure vehicles.<\/p><h3><strong>1.6 France: Theft Figures Fall, but Methods Become More Sophisticated<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/h3><p>In France, figures published in February 2026 by France Assureurs and GIE Argos show a decrease in vehicle theft. In 2025, 64,088 vehicles across all categories were reported stolen to insurance companies, compared with 70,459 in 2024. This represents a decrease of 9%. The reduction follows several years of increasing theft figures. However, criminal organisations continue to develop increasingly sophisticated methods, including electronic techniques that allow certain vehicles to be stolen without visible signs of forced entry. Vehicle theft is also concentrated in particular regions.<\/p><p>In 2025, 18% of all reported vehicle thefts occurred in just three French departments: Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne, Nord and Rh\u00f4ne. Almost 40% of stolen passenger cars are eventually recovered with the assistance of law enforcement agencies and Argos. These statistics cover all vehicle categories insured against theft and do not provide a precise figure for the number of stolen motorhomes and caravans. Nevertheless, they demonstrate that vehicle theft remains a concern, even in a country as popular with camping enthusiasts as France.<\/p><h3><strong>1.7 Conclusion: How Can You Better Protect Your Motorhome or Caravan?<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/h3><p>European statistics show that the risk of vehicle theft remains, although trends vary from country to country. In Germany, the number of motorhomes permanently reported missing decreased slightly in 2025. France also recorded a reduction in the total number of vehicles reported stolen. In contrast, passenger car theft increased in both the Netherlands and Belgium.
